Our Green Policy

We all have a responsibility to care for our environment. Here are some of the ways that we're striving for sustainability at CANTEEN.

Our Food

We use local and seasonal ingredients wherever we can.

We try to source the majority of our fruit and vegetables from local growers and producers, prioritising produce that’s in season. Not only does this mean our lunches taste better, but it also keeps our food miles to a minimum.

We prepare to order.

We ask that our customers order their lunch the day before delivery. As a growing business, preparing to order means that we can manage our food prep efficiently and prevent any unnecessary waste.

Every lunch is portioned with consideration.

We ensure that every lunch is measured and balanced to fill you up, without filling the bin.

We promote ethical eating.

We advocate making good food choices - good for you, and the planet. That’s why the majority of our weekly menu is vegetarian or vegan.

Our Packaging

We use zero plastic and only sustainable materials.

Our packaging is 100% compostable and/or recyclable. From the Vegware food containers we serve in, to the recycled cardboard boxes we deliver in, everything is sustainable and safe for our planet.

We ask that you opt-in for cutlery.

With every lunch order, we give you the option to opt in or out of cutlery depending on where you'll be eating lunch. Just one less thing to throw in the bin if you don't need it.

Packaging FAQs

What is your packaging made of?

The food container bases are made from Bagasse, which is a by-product of sugarcane.

The lids and portion pots are made from Polylactic Acid (PLA), a compostable bioplastic derived from plant sugars.

The outer delivery boxes are made of sustainable cardboard containing 80% recycled materials.

How should I dispose of the packaging correctly?

Simply put all of the food containers into your general waste. This might feel counter-intuitive but without access to an industrial composting facility, that is what Vegware recommends you do. All of the packaging is plant-derived and much safer for the planet than plastic.

To dispose of the outer delivery box, just flatten and recycle it. Alternatively, shred it and throw in with your compost, or head to Pinterest and get creative!

The outer box seems like a lot of packaging, is it necessary?

Because we deliver your lunches by cargo bike, we need a sturdy delivery box to keep everything protected and in place while being bounced through Edinburgh’s cobbled streets.

Delivery

Green delivery on every lunch.

We deliver every lunch by cargo-bike through a partnership with local bike courier Farr Out. Not only do they hand-deliver every lunch with a smile, but keep your lunching emissions at a welcomed 0.
